R.I.P. What Bar
Jail Gee Run
The Morningside Heights Community grieves the recent passing of What Bar. The institution, which died prematurely at the age of 9 months, touched all of our lives.
What Bar was born in the spring of 2001, welcomed by people lining up around the block to request Jimmy Buffett songs on the jukebox. Students rejoicingly met Barnard bartenders hocking cheap, watery sangria and stood on the bar, waiting for unidentified liquids to be poured into their pieholes. It was a place where alcoholism felt justifiable, where the bathroom was a place to pee or make out, where the jukebox played bad music. It felt like Cheers, except without the character development.
Tragically, What Bar could not last. Our parents' hard-earned dollars just weren't enough to keep the place on its feet. Gone forever are the days when the simple question, "Where did you go last night?" could spiral into a neverending comedy routine of epic proportions.
What Bar is survived by the West End (uncle) SoHa (sister) and Saints (roommate). For those who would like to pay their respects, there will a memorial service held this Thursday night, starting at 10 PM at the corner of 109th and Amsterdam. After a brief toast is said, the ceremony will continue until 4 AM with a neighborhood pub crawl.
