Barnard Student Government Shows Resolution

Whereas Thou Art Resolved Be It Then Wherefore, SGA?

The following resolution was voted on and issued by the Student Government Association on March 1, 2004.

RESOLUTION REGARDING INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM AND DIVERSITY

WHEREAS, the Student Government Association of Barnard College (‘SGA') is the representative body of the students of Barnard College

WHEREAS, Barnard College, affiliated with Columbia University, is recognized as being a leader in the
academic community

WHEREAS, SGA believes in the right of students and faculty to engage in intellectual discussion and debate; as members of an academic community, the freedom to discuss pressing issues is crucial to maintaining intellectual integrity.

WHEREAS, SGA believes in maintaining an environment where its members feel supported and free from attack, whether physically or verbally. An environment where people feel as though they must defend their identity, that environment cannot thrive.

BE IT RESOLVED, since these two values can sometimes seem to conflict, SGA maintains that it is the responsibility of members of the community to be aware of both issues in their statements, writings and actions. Only in an environment that promotes both intellectual freedom and sensitivity to diversity, can academic progress be fostered.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that SGA believes that students, faculty and administration, as the main academic components of the community, should take an active role in promoting the ideals of free speech and diversity.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that statements, writings or actions with the sole intention to isolate or attack any member or portion of the community, without any intellectual, literary or artistic purpose, are seen not only as an affront to that member or group, but as an affront to all members of the community.

PROPONENT: Student Government Association of Barnard College
AUTHOR: Jessy Warner-Cohen, Community Affairs Representative
