Intro: “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” expresses a woman’s fears when her man goes out to hustle.
“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”
You put the boom-boom (1) into my heart
You send my soul sky high when your lovin’ starts
Jitterbug into my brain (2)
Goes a bang-bang-bang (3) ‘til my feet do the same
But something’s bugging you
Something ain’t right
My best friend told me what you did last night (4)
Left me sleepin’ in my bed
I was dreaming, but I should have been with you instead (5).
Wake me up before you go-go
Don’t leave me hanging on like a yo-yo (6)
Wake me up before you go-go
I don’t want to miss it when you hit that high (7)
Wake me up before you go-go
‘Cause I’m not plannin’ on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
I wanna hit that high (yeah, yeah)
Notes:
1. In this use of alliteration, the words’ literal meanings are irrelevant. What’s important is the percussive sound of these words put together, since the MC has to be a DJ first, crafting music through his poetic devices and manipulation of the lyrics. An MC had to earn the right to the microphone, which came only after grinding out a reputation with the beats.
2. This is a regular theme in any hustler’s narrative, since the sensation of doing crack cocaine is often described by junkies as a “jitterbug into my brain.”
3. The alliteration from the “boom-boom” continues in the “bang-bang-bang” of this line, extending the metaphor while simultaneously enhancing the flow. But whereas literal meaning is irrelevant for “boom-boom,” this line alludes to the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry.
4. Here, the rivalry’s intimacy is brought into play, calling out the connection between Tupac and Biggie in their earlier days.
5. Occasionally, you’ll hear a hustler’s rhyme announcing remorse for the time spent away from his lady and his family.
6. A hustler never knows whether he’ll return home after a day of work.
7. Another allusion to the nature of his business.
